The main objective of the department of Orthodontics is to educate the undergraduate dental students, i.e., to provide the necessary knowledge and clinical skills so that the students will be able to diagnose malocclusions and apply the appropriate preventive and interceptive measures. The department is also responsible for a 4-year postgraduate program of clinical specialization in Orthodontics as well as a 4-year PhD program. The PhD program is mainly composed of international students.
The department carries out in vitro as well as in vivo research in areas related to orthodontics, such as treatment procedures, orthodontic materials, friction, root resorption and white spot lesions. The research performed continues to be published in prestigious orthodontic journals. The department’s research has received numerous awards on a national as well as on an international basis. Furthermore, the department was awarded the Houston Research Award at the 85th Congress of the European Orthodontic Society, Helsinki, Finland in 2009.
